Kellie's Spine Story

Mar 3, 2020

Kellie Hayes, ortho patient, Florida Medical Center

Kellie hayes

Kellie’s very active lifestyle led her to believe that she simply “pulled something” when she experienced sudden pain in her shoulder and neck. She enjoys biking and kayaking regularly and could even lift her kayak into the back of her truck. Kellie’s shoulder and neck pain eventually led to numbness in two of her fingers. After consulting with her primary care physician, she was seen by a neurologist that ordered an MRI and recommended surgery right away. Her decision became an easy one after spending time with Dr. Jessica Okun, neurological surgeon on staff at Florida Medical Center. Kellie explains that Dr. Okun “… is very responsive, personal and talked to me for over an hour. She is professional and has a wonderful bed side manner. Dr. Okun is my hero.” Without hesitation, Kellie scheduled her surgery with Dr. Okun to treat her Spinal Cord Compression.

Kellie raves about the care she received from the Specialty Surgical Suites, located on the 5th floor of the hospital. “Florida Medical Center is above and beyond anything I ever expected. I could walk from my house to another hospital, but I chose FMC. The nurses are a 50 on a scale of 1 to 10, they were amazing, patient, caring and loving. The hospital really is a hidden treasure.” Kellie is currently recovering from her procedure but has no doubt that she would return to FMC for any other procedures she may need in the future.
